Sung Yoo
Virginia GMC Leadership Team Member and Presiding Elder
I was born and grew up in South Korea. I earned a Bachelor in Theology degree at The Methodist Theological Seminary in Seoul, South Korea. I came to the United States in 1998 and earned a Master of Divinity degree at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree at The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. I started my full-time ministry in 2003, serving Oakwood UMC, and was ordained as an elder in full connection to the Virginia Annual Conference in 2008. I served Blacksburg UMC as associate pastor for two years (getting acquainted with Hokies), Emmaus UMC of Stratford Hills in Richmond, Regester Chapel in Stafford, and Sudley UMC in Manassas. I currently serve Nokesville Methodist Church, a Global Methodist congregation, in Nokesville, Virginia. I like playing table tennis and drums, watching movies with my family, taking family trips to explore new places, and watching a food channel with my wife. I am married to Wonsoon. We have one son, John, whom we call “John the Methodist.”
